DPAAL at Calvert22 Foundation

On the morning of the 27th of October, DPAAL attended a talk on "The Role of Cultural Diplomacy in a Globalised World" at the Calvert22 Foundation, followed by a presentation of the "Red Africa Season" and a networking light lunch.

Jamie Rann from the University of Oxford and Calvert 22 Foundation Trustee talked about the role of cultural diplomacy and soft power in the modern world. Culture is important and sharing culture internationally is important. But how exactly this sort of cross-cultural communication can work in the present day? Whether you are a country with a long cultural tradition or a small nation, it is important to make enough emphasis on the recent cultural achievements. First question: why contemporary culture? Contemporary culture is the best way of challenging the stereotypes, it unites people being an international language. Secondly, contemporary culture means young artists, filmmakers, musicians and designers – young creative people need help and support internationally more than established and classic figures. Culture as ‘soft power’: The talk also calledll into question the efficacy of ‘soft power’ as a policy, or at least as an approach to culture.
